Grand Havana Rum is still produced today as it was in Havana, Cuba
at the turn of the 19th Century. Not much has changed since my great
grand father Don Tirso Arregui produced his home-distilled libation.
 |
We
do not distill our rum in continuous still distillation (single
distillate) or column distillation. Grand Havana Rum is distilled
in Copper Kettle Still. Pot Still distillation is the traditional
method of distillation that has been handed down since the inception
of rum making in Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean. Pot Still
Distillation involves the use of copper or copper lined kettle,
which holds the dead wash a high wine retort and low wine retort.
Distillation in this manner is achieved batch-by-batch in the
copper still, not much different than that of single malt whiskeys
or very fine cognacs. |
Pot
Still (or double distillate) creates rum richer in character than
most single distillate rums. GRAND HAVANA RUM is allowed to mature
up to 7 years in our sherry casks brought over from Spain; this
allows it to acquire an aromatic character unlike the world's finest
cognacs.
AGING
 |
Rum
is a spirit that improves with age, and we are never in any
hurry when it comes to aging GRAND HAVANA RUM. To this day the
aging process remains one of natures secrets. It is has been
known that rum ages best in 40-gallon oak barrels that have
been charred on the inside. |
GRAND
HAVANA RUM utilizes 40-gallon sherry casks brought over from Spain
that have been charred on the inside. These casks (barrels) were
once used to age the finest sherries (cognacs) from Spain. The permeability
of the oak allows air to flow and allows the rum to mellow. The
Spanish sherry casks also contributes to the rums smooth taste and
gives the rum its warm golden color. Since we add no artificial
coloring to our rum, the color of rum may vary from batch to batch.
BLENDING
 |
The
final secret of an exceptional rum is blending, the last step
of he rum making process. What separates us from other rums
is that we only blend the different batches from our pot still
productions. This is what sets GRAND HAVANA RUM apart creating
its unique heavy body and greater persistence. |
Since
our batch distillations vary from 5 years to 8 years, our end goal
is to provide you the connoisseur with an unmistakable flavor and
richness like no other rum in the world. Our Cuban
Master Rum Blender has been blending rum since the mid-20th century.
He utilizes the different batch distillates like an artist utilizes
different colors to create a work of art. This marrying process
allows the different rum batches to fuse together and also creates
a smoothing effect to our rum.
After
the rum blend has been allowed to marry it is run into the bottling
vats and reduced to bottling strength by the addition of pure spring
water.
